Volunteering at Spicy Villa - Chiang Mai

Já lá vai um mês desde que saímos da Spicy Villa, onde estivemos (quase) duas semanas, inesquecíveis. Fizemos novos amigos, com quem acabámos por seguir viagem, já noutro país. Descobrimos novos talentos, capacidades, limites e habilidades. 

Entrei em contacto com o Samart (responsável pelo projecto social e de eco turismo, nos arredores de Chiang Mai), antes mesmo da nossa viagem começar. Apesar das várias tentativas (frustradas) para encontrarmos um sítio e projeto ideal para podermos fazer voluntariado, eis que me deparo com a Spicy Villa. 

A Spicy Villa Eco Lodges, é um lugar muito especial. Todos os bungalows são construídos de forma tradicional, como fazem desde há séculos (de bamboo e materiais reciclados), existem painéis de energia solar, agricultura orgânica, etc. Para além disso, este projeto tem uma responsabilidade social, trazendo até às comunidades locais o ensino de Inglês e cuidados médicos básicos. 

Quem decidir ficar aqui alojado, pode participar em atividades muito variadas: caminhadas, visitar e mergulhar numa das cascatas/quedas de água da zona, ver os arrozais e aprender como se colhe o arroz com os locais, passeios de elefante e até aprender a cozinhar pratos tailandeses! Enquanto voluntários, tivemos a oportunidade de participar em algumas dessas atividades, no nosso tempo livre. 

It's been already one month since we left Spicy Villa, where we spent two unforgettable weeks. We made new friends, with whom we've been traveling ever since, already in a different country. We've learned new skills, tested our limits and abilities. 

I got in touch with Samart (founder of this social and eco friendly project, in Chiang Mai), even before our journey began. We contacted a few people before, for volunteering opportunities, but most of them didn't answer us back. But that was until I learned about Spicy Villa Eco Lodges and talked with Samart, who almost immediately emailed me.

Spicy Villa is a really special place. Every bungalow is built in a traditional way, with bamboo and recycled materials, there's solar energy being generated, organic farming, etc. Besides that, there are initiatives to help the local communities, like teaching English (specially to children) and basic medical care.   

Whoever decides to stay here as a guest, can participate in many different activities: trekking, visit and swim one of the waterfalls in the area, see the rice paddies and learn how to harvest the rice with the locals, elephant riding and even learn how to cook Thai food! As volunteers, we had the chance to join some of these activities, during our free time there.

Este galo fazia questão de nos acordar todos os dias, assim que o sol nascia (por volta das 4 da manhã). Ao fim de dois dias, já se faziam apostas para ver quem o conseguia apanhar e fazer um barbecue.

This roaster made his personal mission to wake us all up, every single day, at sunrise (at around 4am). After two days, everyone was betting on who was going to catch and barbecue him.

Em cima, o Paulo está sentado numa das camas de rede que tínhamos em frente ao nosso quarto/bungalow. Continua a ser o maior quarto que tivemos, até agora, nesta viagem. Passávamos aqui bastante tempo a relaxar, ao fim da tarde e depois do jantar, a conversarmos com o resto do pessoal. 

Em baixo, o Thibault filma a nossa primeira ida a uma cascata, depois de um primeiro dia de trabalho (duríssimo). Não esperem fotografias de nós a trabalhar, pois não era nada prático, como podem imaginar. Andávamos a carregar tijolos, gravilha, a cavar buracos, plantar couves chinesas, enfim. Aproveitava para fotografar nos tempos livres, sobretudo.

Above, Paulo is sitting in one of the hammocks we had in our room/bungalow. Still the biggest room we've had, so far, on this trip. This is where we usually spent our free time relaxing and chatting, at the end of the day, with the rest of the guys.

Below, Thibault is filming our first trip to one of the waterfalls, after a really hard first day of work. Don't expect photos of us working, it wasn't practical to take pictures while carrying bricks, gravel, digging up holes, gardening, etc. Mostly, I took pictures whenever we had free time.

Também podemos visitar algumas aldeias locais e ver como os tailandeses, nesta região, vivem. Animais à solta, crianças a brincar às escondidas, vida de campo, a passo lento. 

We also visited some of the surroundings villages and see how the locals live. Animals running freely, kids playing hide and seek, slow passed life.

A comida ocupava grande parte do nosso dia: preparávamos juntos o pequeno almoço, almoço e jantar. Quem quisesse, podia ir para junto da lenha mexer o wok, cortar vegetais, misturar especiarias ou mesmo ajudar a limpar a cozinhar e colocar "a mesa". Toda a gente tinha uma tarefa a executar e havia sempre qualquer coisa para se fazer.

Food took a big role in our days: we would prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner together, always. We could either stir the wok, cut some vegetables, mix spices or help cleaning the kitchen and setting up the "table". Everyone had a task and there was always something to do.

A maioria das vezes, o nosso tempo livre era passado a descansar, ler ou a desenhar. Sem televisão, internet e telefones, as horas demoram mais a passar. Por outro lado, há mais tempo para conhecer os outros, jogar às cartas, cantar e tocar guitarra, fotografar... 

Our free time was mainly for resting/sleeping, reading or drawing. Without television, internet and phones, time goes by much slower. On the other hand, it's ideal to get to know people, play cards, sing and play the guitar, photograph...

Estas últimas fotos foram tiradas no nosso penúltimo dia, que coincidiu com o meu aniversário. Fomos todos surpreendidos com o fogo de artifício, depois de jantar. Obrigada a todos que tornaram aquele dia tão especial.

Aliás, fica aqui o agradecimento geral a todos os que permitiram que esta experiência se tornasse única. Acho que falo pelos três, quando digo que aprendemos imenso com todos e levamos lembranças que nos ficarão gravadas na memória, para sempre.  

Espero ansiosamente pelo filme que o Thibault está a fazer sobre esta viagem, sei que vai estar recheado de momentos hilariantes. 

Fazia tudo de novo.

These last photos were took on the day before we left the place, which was also my birthday. We were completely caught by surprise, with the fireworks, right after dinner. Thank you so much for making that day, so special.

Also, I would like to generally thank everyone who made this such an unique experience. I think I can speak for the three of us when I say that, we learned so much with all of you guys and we take such amazing memories from it. 

I'm really looking forward to see the movie Thibault is doing, about this trip, and revisit some hilarious moments.

I would do it all over again.
